Can cats eat bread?

Only in small amounts  Grains & bread · Updated 2026-11-04

Cats can eat a small piece of plain, baked bread, but it adds nothing useful to their diet. Bread isn't toxic. It's mostly carbohydrate, and cats need meat. The real dangers are raw yeast dough, which can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol, and breads made with garlic, onion, raisins or chocolate.

Is bread good for cats?

Baked white or wheat bread is safe in a pinch-sized amount, but it's empty calories for an obligate carnivore. Raw bread dough is a genuine emergency. The warm stomach makes the dough rise and stretch the stomach, and the yeast ferments sugars into ethanol, which can cause alcohol poisoning. Some cats seem drawn to bread, possibly the yeasty smell, but that doesn't mean it's good for them.

Benefits

  • Not toxic in its plain, baked form

Risks

  • Raw yeast dough can bloat the stomach and cause alcohol poisoning
  • Garlic bread and onion bagels contain toxic alliums
  • Raisin and chocolate breads are toxic
  • Empty calories that can lead to weight gain
  • Some cats are sensitive to wheat

How much bread can my cat have?

This is a ceiling, not a target. Vets say treats should stay under 10% of daily calories, and we use 3% for foods that need limits. It also assumes a typical adult indoor cat's energy needs and 266 kcal per 100 g of bread. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with health conditions need less, so check with your vet.

Cats and bread: common questions

Why does my cat love bread?

Some cats like the yeasty smell or the soft texture. It's a quirk, not a nutritional need.

Is raw dough dangerous for cats?

Yes. Raw yeast dough can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol. Signs include a swollen belly, vomiting, wobbliness and lethargy. Call your vet immediately.

Can cats eat bread every day?

It's best not to. Daily bread adds carbs and calories a cat doesn't need and can crowd out its balanced food.

Can bread help a cat pass a hairball?

There's no evidence it does. Talk to your vet about hairball diets or gels made for cats.
